The High of Power & Control – Over YOURSELF

Have you ever felt powerful? Pretty awesome feeling, right? Great for the ego, great for the hormones, great if you can find a way to humblebrag on facebook.

Same thing with being in total control. “I got this.” Or running the show. “I call the shots.” It’s a rush, a natural high.

Keep that thought in mind.

I learned recently through Xsports4vets how returning military veterans cope with the transition to civilian life.

Because they are in a constant state of red-alert and really on a constant adrenaline high on the battlefield – whether things are calm or chaotic – they look for this sense of normalcy when they return home.

Since life as a typical civilian is far less dangerous and far more boring than being in the middle of a war zone, they look for that adrenaline high – which for them means things are normal, they feel like themselves again in many ways – in dangerous activities.

That usually translates to drinking, drugs, fighting, etc.

What Xsports4vets has done is introduce these veterans to positive, fun, yet adrenaline-filled activities. One of them is a personal favorite of mine, riverboarding.

Through these extreme sports, the soldiers are able to get that adrenaline rush in a constructive way, having fun, and they’re also building relationships as well.

While they are still getting that same chemical and psychological reaction, everything they are engaged in is positive. Productive.

But this isn’t about Xsports or veterans or riverboarding. Just keep that parallel in mind here.

Power and control do the same thing for a person. Power can itself be addictive, because in many ways it gives the same high to the mind and body as does an adrenaline rush.

Power can be exerted in many ways. Thrown around in many situations. It’s quite Darwinian, survival of the strongest and most capable of demonstrating force.

Being a dictator must be one of the biggest highs it’s possible for humans to achieve. Power and complete control over all the underlings that bow to your mightiness.

And while it’s a high, no doubt, it’s kind of like a “dangerous activities” high. Ultimately destructive.

The path of power and control over others leads down the road toward the dictator’s exertion having to be more forceful and total in order to achieve the same level of satisfactory high.

Eventually, everyone’s either dead or so sick of being abused that they revolt, and history shows that dictators on this type of “power trip” do not last long. They can’t – their high is destructive at its core.

This applies to leaders of nations, managers of a business, and basic interpersonal relationships.

Contrast that outcome – a fast track to destruction, death, and failure – with a different way. A positive way.

Getting a natural high through achieving power and control CAN be constructive, life-giving, and lead to long-term success.

How?

The only positive, productive, constructive outlet where power and control can be exerted, stretched, and ultimately fulfilled, leading to that high…

IS EXERTING POWER AND CONTROL OVER YOURSELF.

Control your own productive output through self-discipline. Throw your energy into a show of force over your own abilities, to maximize their potential.

Feel powerful. Bask in your authority, your complete control…over YOURSELF.

That’s the only way to true, positive, lasting influence over other people (for those in leadership positions), and for you the individual, an outcome that leads to long-term creativity, success, and a maximized life.
